I've heard conflicting opinions when I could find something about the topic. Is styrofoam safe for herps?

The back removable wall of Exo Terra reptile tanks are made of styrofoam so I'm guess it's ok. Of course you don't want your reptile eating styrofoam packaging peanuts either so it's a toss up. Why do you ask?

Because it's so easy to shape into anything you want. Do you know of any possible alternatives?

Well you can coat it with something like coconut bark or tile grout. That's what I've done with a few of my setups.

styrofoam is just fine.

Take a look at this method of foam ... it is completely safe and can be color the way you want it.

I posted two threads because I got the idea from the second and it all really started at blackjungle.com but thats another story.

with these methods you dont necessarily need to coat the finished foam its already colored throughout it is inert and it vivarium, terrarium and aquarium safe.

Best wishes
