Hello!

So, I have a spare 5 gallon... but.. I have no idea what I could keep in such a small tank that is non-fish? Someone on another forum suggested house geckos or fire-bellied newts, but I thought it would be too small for them??

Any small sized lizards/frog suggestions that could live well in 5 gallons?

Thanks!

No worries if not, it will just become a Betta or dwarf frog tank .. I just thought I would look into other options... ;)

Native:
a single Wood Frog would do okay if you could catch one, as they stay fairly small as adults. They should have a 50/50 land-water ratio, as they are more terrestrial than other Rana. Spring peepers could live in there, but I don't know if you have them that far west (I know they're found as far north as Labrador in Eastern Canada, though)
I don't think any lizards would be found around your area.

Pet store-bought: A single green treefrog could probably work, you should turn it on its side if you want one, though, as the appreciate more vertical space than horizontal. Its a bit small, but a single green/brown Anole might work, but thats a bit pushing it for floor space. leaf Chameleons are an option, but are hard to find and need very small live foods (termites and fruit flies would work best), so are hard to accommodate.

Thanks for the repsonse!

Funny, I never thought about catching somethingin the wild, that's a very cool idea.. not sure about Spring Peepers, but I know there are various types of frogs that live near me in the summer... I might do some research on them..

I might look into the tree frog idea... they are a gorgeous creature and I know they sell them at my LFS.. will have to put some thought into how to go aobut it all.. I'm between getting a frog or soemthing, or starting to play with planted aquariums..

Thanks!

I know there are more than just wood frogs where you live, but that's the only frog I know of that lives there that could fit in a 5g aquarium. You should check which kind of treefrogs he sells; I wouldn't try fitting any treefrog that gets over 3" in there.

You could keep a viper or dune gecko in a 5 gallon setup if you wanted to get a reptile.

I was perusing my field guide to east/central NA herps and I found that the Boreal Chorus frog lives in your area. It stays small (about 1 1/2"), and would be easy to care for.
