Hello everyone,

Im new to plant keeping (about 30 days) and I am having an issue with the wpg rule for lighting. Wouldn't lumens be a better way to measure output? I have been reading every article/post I can over the last month and I'm afraid that if I would have started reading the wpg rules before I ordered my plants, I would not have ventured into planted aquaria.
I have a 75 g planted tank. According to the basic 2-3wpg, I should have 150-225wpg of light on my tank. I am using a 48" triple tube strip light (3 t-8 32w lamps) and the single tube strip light (1 40w t-12 lamp) that came with my tank. This only amounts to 136 wpg on my tank. My plant growth has been explosive, at least to me. I had to begin pruning stem plants at week 2 and have had to continue each week thereafter.
I had thought about adding another triple tube strip light to my tank after reading about lighting and wpg, but I don't want to have to prune twice a week . While most of my plants are fast growers ( Swords, H. polysperma, Sag, Ambulia, R. macrandra/rotundifolia, etc. etc). isn't this what us newbies should be starting out with until we build confidence and gain experience?
I don't mean to incite a "riot" on the wpg rule but wanted to give my .02 worth on lighting. Like I said, in the beginning the cost of that much lighting, along with substrate costs and the costs of the plants themselves would have discouraged me from ever having a planted aquarium.
I tried to send a pic but the file is too big. Will try to send later.

If things are working well I wouldn't change them. Your current level of light is going to be good for low-moderate level light plants. Once you get over 2wpg you may need CO2 and macro nutrient dosing to avoid algae blooms. If you have no algae problems with good plant growth then you have the right balance.

I agree matpat, I have a 55w compact on a 36 gal, and I haven't had my plants in a week and they are growing fast IMO. I have quite a variety in there also. Lighting seems to be only part of it, if the plants are getting what they need in all categories, they seem to grow well.

Matpat t8 bulbs put out more light than t12s so that should also be a consideration. I know what you mean about the wpg rule though. I have a 35 with only one 20 watt powerglo t8. I began adding plants to it a couple months ago, with my most recent additions this weekend. Growing it are vals, egeria densa, ludwigia repens, dwarf sag, anubias, and recently I added rotala indica and bacopa.

Thanks for the response. I am currently using co2, but not dosing yet. Recently switched substrate from large gravel (in tank for 4+ yrs) and Substrate Gold to Eco Complete and Tahitian Moon Sand. The Substrate Gold clouded my water for 3 weeks. Plus it re-clouded every time I moved something.

Again this brings me back to the wpg thing...I have rotala macrandra that is a beautiful red along with A. reineckii that is also a nice red. Also r. rotundifolia is pinkish along with "Sunset" hygro, B. caroliniana (I think) and E. stellata. I have read that theses plants need at min. 2 wpg (which I don't seem to have )and co2. Any ideas?
