I currently have a 3 inch oscar in a 10g with two 10g filters. I got him about 3 months ago when he was only 1.5 inches. he was one of my first fish and i wasnt as informed about aquarium-keeping as i am now. I cant afford a larger tank for him now that i know he grows more than a foot. he's only 3 inches now and doesnt seem cramped in his tank. My family and me love him very much because he is very entertaining. It will be sad when i eventually have to take him back =(. So around what size should he be when i have to take him back? or should i be taking him back now?

Yes, as others have said and you are doing...it is best to do it now. The longer you have the lil fella, the more you will fall in love with him. So sorry to hear about it, they are wonderful fish and have such personalities! It broke my heart to get rid of mine. He was 14" in a 150g tank, but I had to move and the tank couldn't go with. Good luck, at least you found this site and realize what needs to be done. Again, so sorry to hear about it.

As the others suggest, return him now.

I also got an Oscar 3 months ago, but mine has grown from 2" to 5" in that time. So the smaller tank has affected him already. It wont be harmfull long term, yet, but trade him for something that you can keep in a 10gal, and hopefully he will end up in a bigger tank some place where he can grow out properly.

The problem in a 10gal is you just cant feed any size Oscar the way you should, mine eats earthworms as long as he is, just too much waste for a 10gal, even with double filters and extra water changes.

I started my guy is in a 55gal, but I have a bigger tank to set up for him and his pleco "buddy".

Edit, A pearl gourami is about the biggest single fish you could keep in a 10gal, and a healthy 4" gourami is better than a stunted sick 5" Oscar, so maybe try and do a trade for one of them.

A 10 gal would be WONDERFUL for a sorority of female bettas! They are very fun to watch too, or a single male would really apprechiate that tank!
