View Full Version : Electrician in here ?
Hi again !
I got a little problem, i just bought a fixture at Home Depot, its a 2 no 20 w fluorescent fixture made by lithonia, it was cheaper than bying the sockets and ballast  , then i bought one 20 w power glo and one 20 w marine glo, but when i plug it in, the marine glo barely flashes, i can see the elctrode getting orange inside, but it wont fire it up, and the power glo dont flash at all, on the ballast it clearly says for 2 20 w tube r.s. (rapid start ?), do i need to add ignitors ?
Thanks
Take that one up with home depot. Unless your lights are burnt out maybe you can check that with another fixture.
Thanks , but i think i got my problem, on the ballast it says :
For 2 20w t12 lamps, and i got t-8's

Some magnetic ballasts won't fire T8s. I am stuck with T12s on one of my tanks for that reason. You can buy the appropriate ballast from McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/), and wire it into the fixture, or you can buy T12 bulbs with the desired color temperature.

BTW, theres no such thing as a 20 watt T8. 24" T8 bulbs are 18 watts, and 24" T12 bulbs are 20 watts.

No , on the t-8 tube box its clearly says, 20W 59 cm/24" T-8
Anyway, i solved the problem, i bought an instant fire ballast, it was 3 $ more but now both lights work and there is no flickering at startup.
For those interested the ballast number from HD is :
Advance transformer co.
standard rel-2p32-sc instant start electronic ballast.
25 $ canadian dollar.

Then there wrong. ;) Theres no such thing.
Why would Hagen write the wrong wattage on the box , these bulbs are very popular, i have 1 marine-glo, and one power-glo ?

Look on the bulb. My guess is that it will say F18T8, which indicates an 18W bulb. As I recall, you get the same amount of usable light as a 20W.
here is a pic of the bulb :
