View Full Version : Check your tank temp!
Just a friendly reminder to all to check your tank temperatures on a daily basis.
Went to feed the fish yesterday and noticed some of the Anacharis stems were badly melted. Temp was up at 83 and when I reset it for a lower temp hoping it would reset itself, within two hours it was up to 86! Guess it was stuck in the on setting..
Pulled the plug, and replaced it with a spare.
This was a replacement heater, older Stealth model, for one that faulted previously and it was less than a year old.
If I didn't see the Anacharis (my canary in a cage) I probably wouldn't have checked the temp.
So, again, check your temperature. Take nothing for granted.

Agreed, always check the temp. My 55g skyrocketed one evening about a month ago, and was up at ~86*. I checked the heaters, and sure enough, one was stuck on. I unplugged it and ran just one heater overnight, and promptly replaced the faulty one with a spare after school the next day.
About a year ago, I had a 25g in place of my 55, and one day it's heater went psycho while I was at school. I came home to a 95* tank:eek3: :omg::nilly:and a massacre of fish. Only a couple of fish survived that incident. I also immediately swapped out that heater for a spare.
Needless to say, I now check the temp twice a day, in the morning when I get up, and just before I hit the sack. I am not taking any chances any more.

Very good advice! I always check it when I'm feeding, and when I'm dosing ferts so that it's part of a routine.

This is what I use so I don't need to check my temperature.

I check daily but work so anything can happen by time I get home. especially when I just had stealth pro get fried. using visitherm deluxes made in italy but new ones purchased now made in china so they may be suspect.
so yeah gotta check at least twice a day for myself.

Great reminder. I don't always check daily, but I try to remember to check when I feed in the morning. I just got a couple digital thermometers so that I have 2 thermometers (one floating glass and one digital) on both my tanks at home for extra insurance that it's correct all the way through the tank and the thermometer isn't wrong. I'm planning on getting a digital thermometer/glass scrubber (Maglife digital thermometer plus, found on Big Al's) for my new 5.5g betta tank.
That temp alert thing is a great idea!

I check my mudskippers and betas everyday but thank goodness it is getting warm. I have unplugged all the other tanks. I worry though about them getting to hot in the summer.
