I have a 55 gallon tank full of cichlids. I have had it up and running for about a year maybe year and a half. My husband has a albino oscar in the tank also. I recently had to treat the tank for hole in the head because of the oscar. I ahve treated the whole tank, cleaned it changed filters and everything i was told to, BUT I can,t seem to get my nitrate level down. Everything else is where it should be except the nitrate level. What can I do? Is there a chemical or something different I can do to fix this easily? Thanks so much,Tracy:cool:

I use water changes water changes water changes. Also there is a product called Nitrazorb. It's in a bag that you simply add to your filter. It's supposed to help bring nitrItes and nitrAtes down.

How much are you feeding and how big are the fish?

How bad is the nitrate level?

I agree that water changes are the only real tried and true method. But also test your tap water to see if it contains nitrates. Sometimes this happens and if it is the case everytime you do a water change you add more nitrates to the tank. In this case you have to start doing much bigger water changes to compensate for the added nitrates.
