Hey all. I'm just wondering, do I really even NEED a power filter???
I know that some tank "styles" (like Diana Walstad) don't use them & my HOT dual bio wheel filter is really presenting an obstacle to my plans for a DIY light canopy. Thanks in advance for any help.

Some sort of filtration is advisable unless you do a Walstad.
You can always go with a canister.

I've been thinking about a canister, but 2 things concern me,
1. The price of them
2. The amount of bio filtration they provide, is it at least equal to that of 2 bio wheels & does it need to be (what with having live plants & all) ?

Typically with regard to bio filtration it depends, canisters typically have compartments to set them up as you like. For example in my Fluval 405 I use nothing but lava rock and noodles in all the compartments and the sponges as the prefilter. That flexibility allows you to do pretty much anything.
To be fair in my Aquaclear 300 they have just noodles and sponges as well no carbon. Since they are planted the plants and water changes take care of the rest.

OK, so that alleviates one of my concerns, but leaves the other more pressing concern, PRICE ! So, in an attempt to get over that hump, what are your thoughts on this:

I would go with the SUNSUN. I might just buy on for my tank.
very tempting at that price.

If you get yours before I get mine (very probable), let us know how it works please.

Take a look at the Planted Tank Forum in the equipment section. There are some members there that have done reveiws of SunSun filters.
