HP:-
Intel(R)Core (TM)2 Duo CPU 1.40GHz, 1.4GHz, Memory 512MB of RAM

Intel(R)Pentium(R)Dual CPU T3200@2.00GHz,1.32GHz, 956MB of RAM

What do all these terms mean?

The Toshiba

My fiance has had a Toshiba for almost three years now and has had pretty good luck with it. For the Toshiba and HP specs you listed above, the Toshiba is better.

Depends on what OS are you running? Neither of them be good for Windows 7. Both be ok for XP but you'll see some slowness on both laptops.

With the specs you gave, the HP is faster than the Toshiba on the CPU speed.

Thus I 'll go with the HP and upgrade the memory atleast to 3 gigs of RAM

toshiba, hands down.

a pentium dual core 2gigs would be very competitive if not out perform the core 2 duo at 1.4gigs. also... ime xp doesn't run much faster than 7 after updates...

toshiba... and if you have any issues buy another hard drive, swap it with the old one, load ubuntu on it and back your files up on that.

just sayin...

i vote HP. i have a HP Pavilion, got it in August of '08, and i love it! running Vista and it doesn't slow it down at all.
