Hey all, I'm looking for some expert opinions here. I have a group of rusties, and now that they've grown a bit, there seems to be alot more sparring going on. Anyway, I noticed some white marks on one of them and I'm wondering if it could be from the battling or if it may be some sort of fungus. I've never had any of them ill before this, and everyone is eating well and very active. Here are a couple of pics. You can see the tell tale white lips from lip locking and sparring. Thoughts?

I think it is battle scars, although you are always suspicious around the mouth for columnaris. Keep the water clean, if it is better or worse in a couple days should give you an answer for sure.

I see the same thing with my Calvus they beat the crap out of each other and they usually end up with the white scarring that your Rusty's have on the sides and face area, as for me i never see any issues with it turning into fungus but i do weekly water changes as well, my tanks stay clean..

So i would say that as long as you are keeping clean water and filter material your fish should be fine, just keep an eye on the fish in question to make sure it doesn't go fungal..

You can also dose 1 Tablespoon of non iodized salt per five gallons as a remedy / healing agent..

Battle scars, IMO. You can also use Stress Coat; its aloe vera may help to heal and protect the fish's skin.

Thank you all for the help. I do wc's at least once a week so water quality is not an issue.
I'll keep an eye on him and maybe add a bit of salt if needed.
