Okay after lots and lots of deliberation, I bought a 2" blue paradise fish from a LFS for $4. He is not very intensely colored, more like the pastel blue paradise fish. The LFS employee (who seemed to know what he was talking about and kept a 90 gallon SW at his home) told me he would brighten up after getting adjusted once I took him away from the stress of the pet store community tank (with about 7 other paradise fish).
So after getting him, I take him home and get him adjusted slowly. Then I run out to Petsmart to get some anacharis. Guess what is swimming around in the plant tank? About 5 deeply colored paradise fish, plus a separate tank with about 15 of them moderately colored for $2 each. I had never seen them there before, but now I'm kicking myself. Aaargh!
