I currently have a non-cannister HOB filter on my 29 gal planted tank. I like to keep the outflow high because it makes my tetras come out of hiding to swim around in the current and play. But even with the water level very high in order to eliminate splashing from the outflow, I'm still concerned that a strong current across the surface of the water will outgas my pressurized CO2. I am looking for a simple, low maintenance cannister filter, HOB style, that will enable me to provide a strong outflow current well beneath the surface of the water. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Look into the Aqua Clear models, not sure what size you need for a 29. Just make sure they will go over the lip of your aquarium, they only have about 1" of clearance. But they allow you to use several types of media and have good flow and fairly easy maintenance. Good luck.

My bad did not notice the canister part of your question, no doubt the mag is the choice/
