From what I read, the province had basically been dragging its feet on requiring that these tankers have pilots on board until they clear the reef. I really hope they're able to clear it. My understanding is that short of climate change, ship collisions are the greatest threat to the reef.

you know what that is, thats just pathetic. WTF was a ship doing near the reef with dangerous cargo/fuel in the first place. I mean, cant they just go around? I intend to see the GBR someday and do not want to look at a wasteland.

Its pathetic! people (not all of them) think that their greed is more important then our planet! Well, when global warming wipes out all our coastal cities and stops the golf stream people will start to care. But of course by then it will be to late and 70% of live in the oceans will be doomed, along with 90% of live on land. Its happened b4 and will probably happen again. 99% of all life that has existed on earth is extinct today, will we be next? I should think that we, as "intelligent critters" should be able to avoid extinction, but we seem to be trying to wipe ourselves out. We need to learn a lesson, and fast or else we will join that 99%.

I would urge all who are outraged to stop using all petroleum products immediately. It won't do much to help the environment, and will do less to hurt the big oil companies. But at least y'all won't be a bunch of hypocritical nimby'ers anymore!

I sailed up the GBR many times over 26 years at sea carrying coal from Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay, Gladstone, Newcastle etc to Japan mostly. Also with many other types of cargo too. ALWAYS carried a pilot when we were inside the reef.
The problem here is too many third world companies have totally undercut the Officer and Crew $$$ rates normally associated with the more traditional Merchant Navy maritime nations...i.e. western world and Commonwealth Countries. Third world certification is in most cases purchased or is of such a low standard that there are ports around the world that will not even recognise them and allow the ships in their waters.
When I was Chief Engineer working for a Scottish Company a complete Polish crew of 28 people could be employed for what I was paid as C/E. When the USSR broke up another dirthe of lowly qualified and cheap crews became available.
For the life of me I cannot even imagine what the OZ authorities were thinking to allow a deep sea, loaded, Chinese vessel in their waters without a pilot.
I guarantee the rules are going to change and that many good OZ pilots will be able to get back to work.
