now I just need to get it in a tank that is already set up
wish I knew about it when I set the tank up the first time...

how important is the rinseing they suggest? I have two five gallon tanks that could take some of the fish but I would need to have the tank inhabitable as soon as possible

rinsing is NOT important ...IF you like your water to look like a dust storm for a LONG time ;)

rinse rinse and rinse some more.

I did not rinse, dumped it right in... as soon as I put water in it, looked like a nice cup of coffee. :shake: I have a pretty good filter, and put the micron filter into it. Well, the micron filter took all the sediment out of the water after a couple days, but it's time for a new micron filter! It was impossible to clean. So if you have a few days to burn off, dump it right in, but rinsiing it doesn't hurt. I had plenty of time to let the filter do the work, so I didn't have a problem with dumping it right in. It is VERY dusty, and will make your project a lot more time consuming if you don't rinse.

HTH;)

edit: SnakeIce, you're from WA? GO M'S!!! :D

Just put it in a bucket and run a hose in it while you stir the flourite.

Plants might actually like the sediment because the surface area/volume is higher, my yolo loam is pretty dusty stuff, but coating it with a layer of sand keeps it out of the water column, except when I dig around.

You might be able to use a cup or similar container to dump the flourite right to the bottom without getting the dust into the water. Certainly don't sprinkle it over the surface and let the dust float while the heavier parts settle out first. You want the smaller bits on the bottom.
