does anyone keep crawdads in a freshwater tank? or would anyone be interested in crawdads as maybe food for their bigger fish, or to keep check of an out-of-control guppy population or something?

my friend asked me about this and asked that i check into it, & to see if people do actually keep these things in their tanks or if its recommended

thanks for the feedback!

We had a crayfish from a MI stream for a short time years ago. It tried to eat other fish, hid behind a gravel wall he built & isn't really suitable to a tropical temp. I don't know about as food though, risky introducing "wild" critters & disease.

There are dwarf crays, check the invert forum.

:dance2: I think crayfish are great for any tank! :dance2:

I keep most of my North American crays at room temps but I do have some dwarfs that require heated tanks. And none of mine are active hunters of fish.

Dwarf cajuns (Cambarellus Shufeldtii) and CPOs (Cambarellus Patzcuarensis sp. Orange) also known as Mexican Dwarf Orange Crays are great aquarium dwellers - they're typically not aggressive toward fish and shrimp (my dwarf cajuns have never been), they don't eat plants, and they're not escape artists. I picked up 8 dwarf cajuns plus some shrimp for $50 a while back off aquabid. The CPOs tend to be the spendy ones and are reportedly slightly more aggressive.

:rofl:Crays are very cool critters. I am keeping some now in thier own tank. AND one of them has finally berried up. YEEHAWWW. Baby crays on the way!:nilly:

Crays are great! I too think they are worthy of their own tank. Dwarf crays are a great option too, able to live in most community setups.

well then thanks for all the feedback, it seems like with these things everyone has their opinions much similarly to shrimp-keeping as far as keeping them in their own species-only tank mostly seperated from fish.

Like i said my friend asked me about this and asked that i find out whether people would truly be interested in these things. So if i offered maybe 20 of these things on the forum- wild caught- would anyone be interested?

If he's going to sell crayfish, it's a good idea to check out his state laws covering the species, as well as the state laws for anyone he may sell to. Some states have some pretty draconian crayfish restrictions (like ALL banned in AZ, for example).
