duckweed

anyone have success growing duckweed w/o fertizers & co2? i want to add some to my 10 gal tank w/ 20 w of lighting.

I've got some in a 10 gallon that just has a sponge filter. They don't do super well, probably because they are nutrient hogs, but I still have a decent group after about a year. I do get a lot of dead ones that kind of clutter the tank.

Love the stuff. With enough light they should grow indefinitely. They will suck up nitrates like there is no tomorrow IME. A sponge filter will help avoind getting them 'spun' around in the tank water - a filter at water level can cause them to get pushed under water where they will get entangled in kinds of irritating places and eventually pollute the tank.

Nice thing about the stuff is that you don't need CO2 addition whatsoever, probably not even beneficial to have it since the duckweed can pull directly from the air.

Once it covers the surface, you may see it begin to receed after some weeks go by, often I see that from not providing enough nitrate/ammonia, water changes usually help perk things back up a bit too.

Grrr.... I can't get the stuff around here! That makes me mad! I guess I will have to break down and order some:mad:
