Im looking into dwarf crayfish, they been interesting me more and more so i have yet another question. There are 2 tank possibilities to put the dwarf crayfish. Both tanks are using sand as substrate, the invert tank is kept around 73 degrees while my 55 is closer to 80.
Which of the 2 tanks would be a better living space for a dwarf crayfish? The 55 will have more hiding spots, i just wasnt sure about the compatibility of the fish with the cray.

Option 1: My 29g invert tank - this tank has some rocks and a decent bit of plants(likely adding more) and is inhabited with cherry shrimp, caridina babaulti green and 1 pea puffer(i know the puffer may eat some baby shrimp but hasnt gone after any adults)

Option 2: My 55g main tank - this has a nice decent sized rock cave and i plan on adding another, some plants which ill be adding more of, and some medium sized pieces of driftwood. Inhabitants currently are 4 cory cats, ill be adding 4 more, 2-4 ram cichlids, probably some rummynose tetras, and possibly some hatchetfish.

I dont' think you will see much of the cray in a 55g with rams honestly. It would be better suited for the 29g though the puffer is an issue

I agree, I think the 29 would be better, if the puffer isn't eating adult shrimp I doubt he'll eat a dwarf cray.

Well be careful. My orange dwarf went psycho and ate all my shrimp along with a few rosy reds (which I found decapitated in the morning). They are very cool and interactive though and most dont go insane like mine did.

you sure it was a cambarellus?? I have been keeping mine with fry and shrimp for over a year as well as different ornamental snails.

I think the 29g would be a good choice as well. I think the main danger would be the puffer to the crayfish/offspring but if provided enough hides it should not be an issue. I have never had a dwarf crayfish go after fish. I have had some dwarfs that developed a taste for red cherry shrimps but the shrimps reproduce at such a rate that the missing shrimps are not an issue.

Ill have to rethink the aquascape of my invert tank to add in more rocky hiding spots

would rams try to eat the cray?

they wold likely pick at it and after molting, that is a real problem for a crayfish. You have to remember these crays are just slightly bigger than an adult dwarf shrimp.

That made me laugh for some reason. I'm trying to imagine a tiny cray waving its claws in the air and scurrying across the tank, killing everything in its way.
