:nilly: I found a Mystery snail, that I call Goliath, lay-ing eggs last night, & then I found a clutch that was in the middle of hatching, had no IDEA their were even there. Now what do I do?? I am so happy, I don't know what to do w/ myself. I'm a new Mama!!!

How long have you had the snail? Bridgesii, or Mystery Snails, require both a male and female snail for the eggs to be viable. Females can hold sperm for a couple of months. If you have had the snail longer than that, the eggs are probably not fertilized. That being said, if they are viable eggs and hatch...you will be looking at 50-200 baby snails per clutch. If you do not have the room for growing out that many, and if you do not have a plan for them once they are grown, I would remove the clutches and freeze them prior to discarding them. If you have the space to grow them out, I would put the baby snails in their own tank once they hatch. This will make it easier for them to eat as they will not have to compete for food.

Congratulations Kyna...it looks like we had the same morning surprise. :grinyes: I did not know about them possibly not being fertile, though :uhoh:. I do have several but I don't know what sex they are. Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see!! I'm very excited as well...LOL...Good Luck!! ;)

Snoopy65, I have had that snail, about 5 months, but I have 8 other snails. Our local pet store, has a high demand, for them, but not many on hand. So I'm gonna help him out. Why did you suggest freezing the eggs?
Tonergirl, you found egg clutches? Oh I hope yours are fertile, that would suck if they ain't. So what colors do you have Tonergirl? & how many? I really, really want some purple snails. I have 7 golden, & 2 blue.

Freezing the eggs prior to discarding them is a sure way to make sure none of the snails get out into the wild. It is very important that our "aquarium" friends do not make it into local water ways. If you didn't want the snails and just tossed the clutch in the trash, there is a very real chance some would live.

Why, not let them into the wild??? Not that I'm gonna let any of my snails go wild. But I'm curious?

Anytime we keep any species in our homes, it should never go into the wild. First, there are pathogens that they could carry that the native plants and animals can catch and not have immunities to. Second, feral animals can and do upset the ecosystem for the natives to the point that some species can and do become extinct. It is our responsibility as owners to do all we can to keep that from happening.

:iagree: Excellent advice!!! That never would have occurred to me, thanks! My friend had a cottage on a beautiful pristine Lake, with exceptional Large and Small mouth bass fishing and some Moron introduced Rock Bass into the mix and totally changed the ecosystem there. Now 9 out of 10 casts, you're pulling in Rock Bass and I'm sure that other species were radically affected by the introduction of this new aggressive, species as well.

I have 5 golden snails...3 golf-ball size and 2 little dime size guys/gals. I wish I had some blue or purple, they're really pretty!! Are you taking them out of the tank and hatching them in a separate container or just letting them hatch on their own? I'm not sure what to do with mine. Keep us posted, OK...:)

Ok!! Thats kewl. Never thought about it like that. If I do decide no to keep a clutch, I will freeze them before discarding them. thank you.

I'm gonna leave them where they are for now. Goliath, the one I watch lay eggs, got bread to day. So now I know that I have at least 1 male, and 1 female. She is little bigger than a golf-ball, the male is little smaller than a half dollar. The other 5 golden's are bout quarter size, & the 2 blues a little smaller yet. If I get any blue baby's your welcome, to a few, if you want.
