I'm doing some research on what fish I think I want. This site has been a big help, but I have been reading some conflicting info on some other web sites.

Do danios and neon tetras get along?

Also, do shrimp and snails get along (gold mystery snail and ghost and amano shrimp)?

I know amano shrimp eat algae and detritus, but some people say that ghost shrimp do also, whereas others say ghost shrimp won't touch algae, if they don't touch algae, what good do they do?

If I get shrimp, what environment should I provide them with, if any? Lots of rocks/caves, substrate? Does it matter?

With shrimp and snails, do you ever add any additional specific food for them?

I've been reading conflicting information on whether (gold) mystery snails will eat plants, what are your experiences? I know they work great on algae, which is why I want one.

How likely is my snail going to crawl out of the tank if it can?

Finally, I've read that snails are hermaphroditic, but can they breed with themselves, or does it take 2 snails?

Thanks :)

yes

they're just neat. they don't do much of anything. they're at best a limited scavenger.

not a lot. unless there are predators in the tank...ie, large fish...but they'd probably appreciate some cover.

no, but you need to make sure some food gets to the bottom for the shrimp. snails usually find stuff on their own, plus algae, etc.

they do a somewhat OK job on algae in my opinion. most of the snails i've had didn't bother my plants much. i did have one particularly large mystery snail (which are also known as apple snails) that devoured (or attempted to devour) all of my plants. i think he was a different species than the normal run-of-the-mill snails you find in most petstores.

How likely is my snail going to crawl out of the tank if it can?
it can't. it'd die. not a problem.

apple/mystery snails are not hermaphroditic, as pond snails, for example are. you need two, one of each gender.

Today I was doing a major water change, so I put all of my inverts (a few ghost shrimp and 2 golden mystery snails) in a plastic container. The water change took longer than I expected, and when it was time to re-introduce the animals, I noticed a snail was missing. A few seconds later I spotted him sliding across the mini-fridge.

Also, apple/mystery snails breed above the water line for the most part, and they breathe air through a siphon, so they make frequent trips to the surface, but generally cannot escape an aquarium with a good hood.

Edit: Regarding the eating of plants- they are quite capable, but I hear they prefer fresh veggies to aquarium plants, so just drop a slice in every now and then. Mine like cucumber (but not the skin!).
