Hey ya'll.

So this summer we are planning to put a deck on the house. And next summer we plan to put a pond at the bottom of the hill just down from the deck.

I have some questions though and I'm hoping you guys can help.

We're debating deck materials (cedar vs composite vs redwood vs Ipe... etc). And really not sure what to go with. No matter what I need something that I can maintain without harming fish in my pond since the pond will be close to the deck, and splashing, etc of anything off the deck (sealants, cleaners, etc) could potentially contaminate the pond, so I need to be sure to pick something that I can maintain safely.

Plus I'm not sure about the lawsuits for the composite decking (mold issues, etc) - how prevalent is that?

Anyone have experience/opinions? If we're going to put all this $$$$ into it, I want to be sure that we get something that will last and that we will be able to enjoy safely...

All thoughts welcome. :)

Hmm

Some older treated lumbers used Arsenic as an insectiside. the newer stuff is arsenic free, but you may want to check and see what is abailable in your area.

Cedar looks nice when its new, however if left unmaintained it will turn a nasty looking grayish color. You will have to seal it, or stain it regularly to maintian its look.

Not sure about the composite materials, I have never used them.

thats about all I got. Might think of something more to add later.
