Hello. I have been surfing the sight to find out about the substrate that I will be puting into my 55 planted tank and have learned a lot. I have also found many opinions as to what makes one the best. One that I have found on the sight that doesn't have much information about it is Oil-Dri. Does anyone have experience or knowledge about this product? Does it work any better or worse then Eco, Flourite or SMS? Its cost is a big turn on for me. Btw I am not looking for mud that I will have to replace when the plants use up all the nutrients. What I am looking for is something that will last without breaking down, will hold on to the ferts that I put into it and something that has a lot of what the plants need.

Please help!:feedback:

oil-dri=sms. basically the same thing from the same company. did depends on how you rate a substrate. it has a higher CEC then eco and flourite. it takes a good amount of time to wash. its light in weight so it makes a little harder to plant in. also some people like the black color which the oil dri is a more natural color.

Natural color?

Thanks. What I am wondering is what does the "natural color" look like?

sms charcoal is fired at a higher temp to get the color from what i understand. the other isnt.

Does this mean that it might not hold up (turn to mud) as well as SMS?

Thanks Bob. I been looking on the web in order to find out more about the Oil Dri and I have read in one of my stops that some people have found that their ph dropped very low for awhile when they frist started to use it. Is this your experience? And thanks for answering all my simple questions these last few days.

I am useing a mixture of Oil Dry, Eco and Flourite and I didnt notice a drop in PH and I am not having any problems planting in fact the root systems on the swords are massive IMO. I also dont have any problems with the stems of my Anacharis, Hornwort or Pennywort rotting or breaking off.
