This hasn't happened to me yet and I'm probably being anal about wanting to know every thing all at once but what do you do if you have an ammonia spike.. do you add live bacteria? :scratch:

Here's what I'd do:
1) Find/remove the source: i.e. dead fish, un-eaten food, etc.
2) Do a water change: goal is to bring ammonia to < 1ppm, not always possible if it's a bad spike
3) Observe fish for signs of stress: clamped fins, labored/rapid gill movement, panicky darting about
4) Neutralize with AmmoLock (or something similar) if you can't get the ammonia down with water changes
