I have a HOB filter (for ciculation and ocassional carbon filtering if anything looks cloudy), a 295 GPH maxi-jet powerhead, a cheap protein skimmer, a brine shrimp hatchery, and an airstone for my 29 gallon tank.

I'm afraid of overaerating the water. By the nature of their operation, the HOB filter and Protein skimmer (and maybe brine shrimp hatchery) are going to aerate the water. I don't have to use the airstone, and I can cap off the venturi action of the powerhead. My air pump is a Rena Air 100 that is "for aquariums for up to 20 gallons."

How many of these devices should I have aerating the water?

You cant put too much oxygen into the water, if anything SW holds less Oxygen then FW.

You do not need the air pump and you can cap off the venturi air induction on the power head. The protien skimmer together with the power head circulating the water will provide plenty of airation. Also never heard of putting to much aeration into the water.

I actually have a very cheap (about $20) protein skimmer, that needs a seperate air pump to operate. I don't know how good it is, but the price was right. I'll run it alter this week with my decomposing shrimp, if it doesn't collect any organics then it's never going to, hehe.

Don't know much about your skimmer. But just maybe you need to give it a few weeks to a month to start working.

Your skimmer along with the powerhead should be plenty.I dont use any air stones or such. The bubbles help cause salt creep and evaporation increases.
