I woke up this morning to one of the cories darting all over the tank and swimming spastically, only to end up laying on his side on the bottom of the tank for the rest of the morning, breathing extremely heavily until he just now passed. He has a couple red spots (no streaks) on his body, but I'm not sure if it's not related. I do have a couple of pictures that I will get up soon.
10 gallon tank
3 cories (1 bronze, 2 false julii (one of which just died) all are full grown. The false julii had to be probably around 10 years old, which the bronze is probably around 6.
ammonia and nitrite read 0, and nitrate reads 0-5 (will explain low number) with liquid test kits
2 filters running at the moment- one AquaClear 20 and one Tetra PF10
Heated to 78-80 (just dropped it this morning but don't know what to yet. Heater keeps a steady temp, but the temp set on the dial and temp it heats to are different)
pool filter sand substrate
all fake plants
air stone plugged in this morning
PH between 7.6-8.0
feeding sinking shrimp pellets and once twice a week algae waffers
I've these cories for years. The 2 false julii I believe were some of the original fish in the 30 gallon hex. Last Sunday I moved the 3 cories from the 30 gallon hex to my 10. They were living with a full grown CAE in the 30, and with the warmer weather (tank has no heater) he got more aggressive this year and I believe killed the other bronze cory. I decided to move the 3 cories as they seemed extremely stressed, especially the remaining bronze. I did float them in the 10 gallon in a container and slowly switched out some of the water (same water anyway since they both use tap). The 2 false julii were cruising all around the new tank happily finally after a couple hours, and that lasted for the first few days. Then one started hiding more, at about the same time the shy bronze started cruising all over. I did add a new betta the day after adding the cories (the 18th, cories were added on 17th). He was only in there for a day. Once lights got turned out he got too nippy for me so he got moved and he's no perfectly happy and healthy in his own tank. The bronze cory seems to be in perfect health. He cruises all over the tank looking for food and eats extremely well. The other julii is currently hiding so I'm not sure how he's doing. Have not done a water change since adding the cories (planning on it today).
Some background on the 10 gallon tank... I started fishless cycling in early March and then ended up using an old sponge from the 30 gallon to help it out. The cycled finished about a month ago. I added my old betta, but he was sick before being added to the tank and eventually died of dropsy. I don't know anymore than that. Right after he died I changed as much water as I could once or twice, and then started adding more ammonia to bump up my beneficial bacteria as I was planning to use it as a puffer tank. The tank was empty for 1-2 weeks before I had to add the cories and before adding them I did another 2 very large water changes, which is why nitrate is so low. Could the previous betta that died have left some sort of bacteria? Would it have died in 1-2 weeks with no host or with high ammonia?
Could the cory have died just from the stress of moving, especially with being as old as he was? Or could his age have made him more susceptible if there was any bad bacteria? Should the other cories be safe? Are there any broad range antibiotics that you would recommend I add?
Sorry for the huge story. I just wanted to give all possible information, and I feel so bad, like the cory died because of me and he would have been fine if I had left him in the other tank.
