I have a 10-gallon planted tank and I noticed a few white spots last night. Today he has lots more on him. I don't know if the others are infected, but I'm sure they are since it's in the tank with them.

I wasn't sure what to do, so I got two different medications:

- Rid Ich

- Aquari-Sol

The Aquari-Sol is copper based, so I don't know if I should use it. I have Amano Shrimp in my tank and I don't want the copper to kill them. I've heard that Rid-Ich might stain the silicone, but I couldn't care less about that!! I want my puffers to survive... I"m not worried about what color silicone I have.

Which treatment should I use? I don't have a quarantine tank, so I'm going to have to treat them in the planted tank with the amano shrimp.

Going to start treatment as soon as I find out what to do.

Thanks!

Take the shrimp out! Then medicate with the one medicine of your choice. I am just getting over a bit of ich myself, you might wanna search a few days back.

You should also raise the temperature of the water while you are addressing the problem. Ich is a parasite with a 3 stage life cycle. The medications only affect one stage of the life cycle. Warmer water causes the life cycle to happen faster and hence you'll kill the parasite faster.

HTH and made some sense

Do you have a large Tupperware container? Just add an airstone to it, keep it in a warm place. Shrimp don't produce a whole lot of waste, so you won't have to worry about filtration for the short while they will be in the Tupperware.

You could also try the salt + heat approach, but for me it took too long and I lost a few fish.

I would not use the copper based medication in a planted tank unless you are sure that none of your plants are copper-sensitive.

I would try raising the temp to 85F and adding 1 tbsp non-iodized table salt per 10 gals (wait a few hours between tablespoons). If this doesn't work, then I would start trying the Rid-Ich with the salt and the temp.

HTH.
