Just got a new 55 for my sons room and am looking to get something with some personality to put in it maybe just one or two cichlids or maybe some puffers? Maybe a couple of scats? what would you suggest?

It might look nice with a group of fairies and a group of flag cichlids. Those guys arent too large and they have some color on them. Alternatively, It could also be neat to put a pair of texas cichlids in it, but that might be pushing the space constraints. Keep us posted

depends on your personal preference. if you wanna keep cichlids, maybe a pair of convicts. if you wanna go rare, try blue eyed cichlids.

Obviously this is my opinion but here it goes.

Get a nice medium sized South American cichlid. Green terror, Blue Acara, Jack Dempsey, Salvini cichlid, Firemouth cichlid, or my favorite due to their size and less agressive personality, a geophagus or earth eater. These fish will range in size from 5-12". I wouldn't get two unless one was an Eartheater. You can go with Con's but the other fish are larger and more colorful. Obviously I like Cons but they are not for everyone.

Then get a Rainbow or black tailed shark (nice complement to the large cichlid). A nice small pleco will help out such as a clown or bristlenose. You could get any catfish that are above 4" with any of those fish. You will also be able to get large midwater or top swimming dither fish such as rainbow, giant danio and some others.

Of course a tank with shoals of 20+ small fish and cories is nice too.

Whatever you chose, good luck and enjoy!

i think your son might like oscars since
1-some acctually let you pet them
2-they eat other fish
3-they have LOTS of personslity

An oscar would look really neat and will eventually get to "know" whoevere feeds them and will come to greet them. They can get aggressive so be careful if you have want to have more than just an oscar or two!

1 problem with Oscars is that they will probably get too big for a 55g in length, width and height.

Go to the cichlid forums and ask the people there.

55 gallon would be fine. i kept one in a 55 for about 7 years, he never got too big for the tank. although a 75 gallon would be better.

oscars would be a good choice. one of my favorite fish. it reacts to people, and will even play with a pingpong ball if you give it one. only problem is that you cant have plants, and if you have decor, it should be well securied, cause they like to rearrange alot :) other than that, oscars are like dogs in fishtanks :)

Well I went with the nicaraguan cichid (Hypsophrys nicaraguensis) nice colors and seems like a pretty neat fish so far. Hes in my 90 gal while the 55 is cycleing. I also love oscars but think the 55 is a little small I have one in my 90 gal now and he is a great fish tons of personality and still aggresive enough to stand up to my carpintis. Thanks all for the sugestions though
