Be forewarned that maroons develop serious attitudes as they grow older. Many will not allow hands in their tank, they dig up the sand bed, knock over corals, harass other tank mates and may damage corals used as hosts if they don't have an anenome.

yeah, maroons are VERY aggressive. Perculas are easier to keep and they are more peaceful fish.

MAROONS! They are deff agressive... but I think I was lucky mine comes to the top when I feed it and it took a liking to a small one and the large clown feeds the smaller flakes. Which is probably what percula's would do but maroons have great colors. It's your prefrence though, get what you like and what you can give a good home.

Perculas. In my experience they have been harder to keep, but definitly a passive, attraction to ur tank. I have a clarkii that is about 2" long and i wish i never bought that sucker. Meanest fish in my tank. If u even stick ur hand in there he attacks it.
Try to find a team of clown and anenome, really fascinating to watch em.

Remember chocolate chip starfish will eat anything in the aquarium they can catch, a small chocolate chip wont pose a big problem to any inverts like shimp and snails, but bigger ones will make a snack out of any slow moving inverts (especially mollusks like snails and clams), corals and live rock (putting corals with a Chocolate chip is setting up a buffet line), so its something to take into consideration.

I have a maroon, not agressive at all. He is about 3 inches long, and very reclusive. His tank mates are a Flame Angel and a 6 Line Wrasse.

I wanted a Gold Stripe Maroon, but the LFS didn't have any the day I was shopping and I ended up really liking this little guy.

I also have 3 small 29gallon tanks with 2 pairs of False Perculas and a pair of Maroons in hopes of breeding them. It has been a good 5 months now however, and no breeding has taken place.

thanx

I got a baby maroon gold stripe and its the best thing ever. I hope he doesn't get crazy when he's older, otherwise it's back to the LFS.

I agree with the Clarkii, of all the different clowns I've had, my clarkii I have now has been the nicest :grinyes:

Gotta agree with the clarkii! I have one (Trevor Linden) and he's awesome! A little neurotic at times but that makes him all the more fun to watch!

If you're going for personality and have a chance to watch the fish in person, do so for 15 - 20 minutes. I always stop at the LFS and watch fish a couple times before I purchase, so I can get an idea of personality.

It may not seem like a big snapshot, but if the fish is bullying/being bullied in the tank, it usually shows itself within a few minutes.

I have both percula and a black and white that I adore. they are sweet fish although a couple years ago, they killed a baby maroon when I put it in a 30 g tank with them for about an hour. They act like they have a bit of brain damage, but I would not know what to do with myself if they weren't in the tank. I like the looks of maroons but unless I was going to keep it in a tank pretty much by itself I'm going to stay away. I like the grumpiness, but I also like a tank with more than one fish.

For my money, no clown is more attractive than a maroon.
