View Full Version : Flood of Planaria in 90gal filter...?

So I had a filter partly filled with water in storage for a few days. When I put it on the tank and turned it on, within an hour, thousands of strands of what looks like Planaria were swimming around. I dosed with wormer and left it over night. There are maybe 30 or so left today when I added fish.
I'm just wondering if anyone else realized they can live in your inactive, hot filters? Anything I can do to easily kill off the rest? The fish have gone through major stress the last 2-3 days, so I can't do much else to the tank.
I've never seen so many of these things, it was crazy...:jaw:

I bet it was crazy...
You Probably need to get it checked by a local pet store, they could present a solution to your problem, or get a type of medicine. It also all depends on how long you have had the Planaria in your tank.
That is the best I can do to help you...
I hope it helps!

Planaria isn't always a bad thing, it actually signifies a healthy tank, but of course you don't want swarms of them. I had a problem with them before. THe most common treatment is frequent, thorough gravel vacs and water changes, rinse out the filter and media (in used tank water of course) and also reduce fish feeding to give the planaria less to feed on. A day or two of fasting won't hurt either. If you have some on the glass, just wipe off what you can. I don't know that wormers are necessary, esp if your fish are already stressed. Just keep the gravel and filter clean and be careful not to over feed (that was my problem!). I will still see one or two planaria on occasion, but nothing to worry about. Also, some fish like to eat them!

I used the wormer because last time I found those worms, my fish got C. worms and dropped like flies.
Either way, this weirdness has been long solved. ^.^

No problem. They are either still in the filter and laughing at me or I got them all way back when. Either way, as long as they aren't free swimming in my tank, idc.

I was just thinking, would Prazipro, wormer, work on killing them.

In my tanks, they would never make it to the bottom without being eaten first.
