Is this algae growth the good kind or is this bad?...and what do I put in my tank to help keep it's growth down? My tank been cycling for 1 week but my LR that I put in had been cycling for 3 months at LFS.

sounds like green hair algae - usually caused by phosphates. get rid of it or it will take over your tank.

A newly cycling fish tank is almost always going to go through algea problems. I wouldn't do anything about it at this point. Just wait for the tank to cycle and then start working on cleaning it up.

At this point there is actually 1 thing you can do to help try to limit it. I assume since your cycling the tank is empty? If so, don't run the lights much or at all and make sure your using good water, preferably RO water in your top offs.

During your cycle you'll see green hair algea, brown diatoms, and probably red slime (cynobacteria). Just be patient, don't stress about it, and realize almost every tank has this problem while cycling and maybe even for a few months afterwards. It took me nearly a year for the algea to clear up completely.

Thanks, I figured it was just part of the cycling process. I have been running the white lights 12hrs and blue marine light 10.5 so I will cut down this and hopefully it will help. I will just be patient I guess.

ya 12 and 10 hours is pretty long IMO unless you have some seriously light intensive corals. I run my lights no more than 8 hours. During cycle I wouldn't see a reason to run them at all unless your looking at the tank, depending on how your cycling the tank.
