is that bad? i read that they prefer dimmer lights. should i make my new 48x18x18 tank look dimmer and have more shaded areas for the oscar?

No fish really likes bright lights... makes them easy targets. Making the lights dimmer will likely make your guy a little more active. Also why do you have you lights on during the night? Does the fish have a couple of hours of total darkness?

hehe, he has darkness if it there's a power-shortage or if no one was there to on the light when night comes.
i'll keep that in mind and manage the light better.

I have my lights on a timer. I am at work during the day usually, so I have the lights come on at 1 and go off a 9. Then I get to see my Oscar, and he gets to go to bed too. I think he is use to them, because he gets really active about 15mins before the lights go on, and he goes in his pot for the night about 15 mins or so before the lights go off.

that's an interesting and nice fish behaviour.
