I just pulled out of my laundry room a 10 gallon aquarium I used about 10 years ago. I would like to get it set up. My question is what kind of filter should I use. I am going with live plants and the fish will be cardinal tetras or neons and some kind of gouramis I think. I have a 55 right now that has live plants and I use a canister filter but I do not want to spend that much on this tank. Any suggestions?

for filtering small tanks, i always recommend Aquaclear. for a 10 gallon, i use a aquaclear mini because im not a big fan of current. its almost heavily planted. the pro about aquaclear the other filters (penguin, Emperors) dont ahve is the media basket. you dont have the change the foam blocks. its really easy to clean.

A smaller Hang on back filter should be fine. Doesn't need to be expensive. With Plants the filter will mainly just filter out debris from the water, the plants will take care of the chemical stuff, and what the plants don't use the bacteria culture in your substrate should take care of.

Actually the HOB filters do very little mechanical filtration, pretty much chemical all the way. I would get an AC mini and set it up on your 55 gallon for a week or so and it will get all filled with good bacteria. Then your 10 gallon will be ready to go!!
