I am looking at turning my 55-gallon into a cichlid tank. It has been set up for about 7 years. I have let the current occupants dwindle to a total of 18 tetras, rasboras, pristellas and khuli loaches. The plants are nothing to write home about. The tank has plain gravel substrate and a basic HOTB filter.
I would like suggestions for basic, cheap beginner cichlids that won't outgrow my tank (not Angels). I don't care if my remaining plants get eaten. Also, if the small fish can't escape being eaten, oh well.
For furniture, I am kind of intrigued by the whole rock-work thing. Can anyone suggest a starter-link for that project?
I live in Minneapolis, MN, .
My tap water is:
3 Kh
Off the charts high-Ph
I add buffer at water changes. Now the 55-gallon is at
9 Kh
8.4 Ph
I don't want to do much to doctor the water, except add buffer. But any advice on that topic is welcome.
