ive had my solana set up for almost two months now and all the corals have been transferred, and situated where i like them. Infact i even sold both my sun pods (well im working on selling my 250watt one) and bought the ferarri of T5's which are on their way now. Last night i looked at my rock and i saw a single strand of dino on my superman monti.. which wasn't doing well since the transfer anyways.

Basically if me and a local reefer who has dino as well and has been doing alot of research about it; i met around here cant get rid of it this time im officially saying good-bye to reefing which isnt something i wanna do.. at all :(

certain corals are doing better then others but im doing a black out until my ATI's arrive.

ill post pictures of the tank once those come.

this sucks.

Why'd you get rid of you're sunpods? I thought they were good fixtures.

I wanted a lower light for my chalices to make their colors really pop. the sunpods were to much. ATI t5's are incredible so im very excited to see this. Ive been told they are 10,000 times better then MH.

Especially ATI's they are the ferarri of T5 fixtures! i did research before i bought them, found a guy on NR who posted his solana with 150watt MH with phoenix 14k and then one with t5 and the difference was jaw dropping.

You won't be disappointed with the Sunpower units, they are very good units indeed.

I don't want to rub salt in your wounds, but you could make a very good article on this. I have had a couple of reefs for about a year and a half and have had almost zero algae what-so-ever. I know almost nothing about any algae and this one in particular seems to have a lack of info for battling it. I realize you're losing the fight, but you could outline some of the things you have done and what the results were. It could be very helpful to anyone who finds themselves plagued with this issue. Photos would help as well. Sorry about your misfortune.

tons of photos and ideas in my actual solana thread man! Conskis 34 gal solana! this is just a sort of random thread.

i would have photos but i have no camera atm!

the plan for now is to have a freind take all of my surviving sps corals and move them to his tank. today i tested the PH in the morning and it was at 7.8 which is probably the cause of the dino. i plan on dosing alk in the morning before the daylights come on for a week to raise the ph and then after that do a three day total black out. before i only did the black out which only fended off the dino for a couple days. im hoping with the addition of dosing Alk to raise the PH which has helped in almost all other cases that i can rid myself of such a horrible plague. also ive been in an ongoing battle with dino for around 6 months now so excuse any thing i havent added.. im nearly out of this hobby and its not what i want to do at all.. the only thing i can say about dino atm is.... do not get dino.

I've seen your thread and read about some of your troubles and the things you tried, just thought it would be better in article form so people don't have to go page by page and we could skip comments by other users.

Since I haven't read your whole thread, did you ever try raising the mg to like 1600 or higher?

Sorry to hear this continues to plague your tank... Having read this did prompt me to read more about dinos, as it turns out I had forgotten quite a bit about them. Good luck fighting them off... Hopefully your friend can keep your corals going in the meantime without ending up with dinos himself.

Umm isn't PH testing to be done at near end of photo periods? (rhetorical)
It's only normal for it to be low over night like that.

Ugh...Don't give up. You came too far to just give up.

For the readers here is what he is talking about:

EDIT Update:
I was reading this Conski ... you may want to try the tips in there near the bottom.

Best article ive seen on it! thank you very much toejam. corals leave my tank tomorrow morning and the dosing will probably begin on monday.

i have to figure out how much ALK to actually dose before i begin.
anyone want to add to that question its a 34 Gallon Solana

(please dont send reefcalc's lol i know where they are at ;) )

Heres the only recent photo i have of my corals and its only of two of my chalices with actinics on someone took with their nice camera. look at how much my little miami hurricane has grown :D!

In that article it even brings it up.... I do exactly what it says regardless ...I use all of my phosban at once having 50% full reactor of media. But never was to prevent Dino.... Cyano =p

I swear everyone with reef should have one =)

hey guys

how do you distinguish diatoms from dinos? I have what i thought were diatoms but i noticed a bunch of little bubbles on the brown stuff, and as the day goes on the bubbles and a clump of the brown stuff will float to the top. It's only on the sand. Only thing i have lost are a couple hermits but that was a couple weeks ago and none lately since i've noticed this.

What do you guys think?

P.S. Sorrry for hijacking your thread.

Study that article for one. Diatoms only appear on the start of a new tank and feed on silicates ...you don't add more to a tank after it's matured...diatoms usually eat up the supply and die off.

Dino's from that article can vary ....the brown type does look much like a cyano break out...and depending on your light can be hard to ID between the two.

The thing I caught onto was that the Dino does affect snails ...being lethargic and then losing them....so if you are seeing this and snails are being affected...its likely dino.

That article covers a lot of things I would start there.

I "knocks on wood" hope to never deal with it ever. But I also use a phosban reactor and never let phosphates get a reading. I already practice what the article says to ..without even knowing about it till recently. =)

It sounds like you deal with it like cyano...but its more lethal due to toxins.

I did read that, and what scared me is the fact that i did notice that a couple of my halloween hermits didn't move for a couple days but were still alive and not retracting back into their shell but were in the same spot for 3 days straight. And i have lost a few snails to but i figured something just may have ate them.

toejam! i have one ;) its running GFO as we speak haha

P.S. Sorrry for hijacking your thread. < no problem its on topic lol

Also so everyone knows Dino does not kill anything by eating it or using chemicals it has.. dino merely covers sps to the point of suffocation on the zooxanthelle to the point where they expel from the coral.. this seems like it would take a while but it happens over night and you can wake up to your sps being completely rocked by this stuff. It doesnt really affect LPS or zoathinds or anything cause the polyps are to large to cover. A great sign off dino is your sps having little brown strings on it.
