Nice critters Rachel.

about adult size, just around an inch. I do likely have both sexes, but sexing them is not an easy task

thanks jacki!

So if I ordered say, 6, there would be a good chance of getting both sexes? Did you breed them?

msjinkzd
05-31-2010, 10:11 AM
i imported them and yes, I think there is a good chance of both sexes. I see many that are less vibrant and "act" like females but they can become subdued when in large numbers so its hard to know for certain their gender until they spawn.

Wow, $5 a pop on the marbled tigers? You must have gotten some more information on them. So are they related to "regular" tigers, another color morph of the brown like the blues (did I hear something about a "red" variant?) or a different caridinia entirely, or for that matter a species outside the caridinia/neocard strata altogether?

/yrs in puzzlement... :)

msjinkzd
05-31-2010, 10:42 AM
I think they are a color morph. They are super nice and already off the import list (i tried to get more I liked them so much). I don't know when they will be available again :)

Are the galaxy rasboras gonna be something you will be carrying for a while? We are in the process of buying a house and not able to buy anything till we move and set up the bigger tank.

i would assume so as they are breeding :)

I wish you could sex those scarlet badis. I am changing their name to scarlet bad *** because they are so tiny and act so big and bad when they flare up at each other. I could use some females to even it out, but definitely don't need any more males in the 45 gallon. I had them in with my rcs and endlers, but I am pretty sure they were eating the shrimp and KNOW they were tormenting them because they never came out. Now they are in the 45 with the bigger fish, well bigger for me:)

msjinkzd
05-31-2010, 6:14 PM
I can sure try, but its really hard to tell especially when you don't have them set up in a forever "ideal" environment. I have so many together, they don't necessarily exhibit their true and full colorations to use that as a clear marker. The females have a typical movement and the males do too, but there are just never any guarantees.

laevisland
05-31-2010, 7:29 PM
Would I mess up your numbers if I took 4 females (as far as you could tell)? Also, how do the males act when they are with females. They are fine with other fish, but are really nasty to each other. I'd love to just put them in my 20 gallon with yellow shrimp and CRS, but the red cherries are petrified of them and I'd be pretty mad if they ate my crystal shrimp!

msjinkzd
05-31-2010, 7:46 PM
the males stake out a territory and hang out solo. They move in short little bursts ending with a flare of their pelvic fins. The females seem to sort of "pack" together and move in more fluid motion. Anecdotally, people say the drab ones are the females, but I have not always found this to be the case upon observing behavior. To pick out females, I feel like I need to observe the fish for quite awhile and take note of behavior more than simple color. Its not as easy as just pulling out the drab ones though I can certainly do that as well.

Also, despite their small size, they will absolutely eat juvenile shrimp. These guys are eating full sized white worms (which are small, but still decent sized in comparison to the size of the fish) avidly.

laevisland
05-31-2010, 8:16 PM
Ok-I should have cash on Thursday and will hope you have some left. These guys even put the adult cherries in hiding. I don't know how many they shrimp they polished off, but it seemed to be a good number.

Rasbora agilis (?) $2

or

burmese gold ring danios $2.50 each

Do you know how big they will get full grown? Also how well will they school?

Craig

The agilis get about 2"-2.5". They are SUPER dense and tight schoolers, sticking more top to mid level. They are very interactive and are amazign in a large group.

The gold rings will max out at probably about 1.5". They are less of a schooler though they are actively engaged wiht each other all the time. I don't have as good of an idea of their schooling behavior as they are in a smaller tank. If I moved them into a tank with more area, they would likely be tighter schoolers. They are very dashy and daring and present in the tank though, not at all timid.

Do you still have rummynose tetras? I picked up 5 at a LFS, one they gave me free because he wasn't looking so good and he did die 2 days later, but the other 4 are doing great and are the best schoolers I've ever had. They seemed to school tighter when there were 5...

i just have my personal stock. Once I sell a few other species, I will bring those and some cories in. Right now I am at my capacity for fish species without risking cross contamination because of placement in the fish room.

They are still a consideration I jsut don't want to add soemthing that will take away from the Betta Albimarginata but something that will school and be more of a dither fish. Think these Gold Rings would fit that bill? Also if I got 12-16 of them I would end up with a decent M/F ratio? I know hte females get slightly larger then the males.

As far as Mark at Anubias Design nice guy and all but my last dealings with him didn't go very well so I haven't been doing any buisness with him. But this isn't the place for venting about that.

I would think you would end up with a good ratio. I will do some closer inspection to see if I can sex them, but honestly hadn't given it that close of a look with those guys. I do think the gold rings would be a good dither though.

I can try and get more pics tomorrow, going out of town for the day in a few minutes. I really think that the "bangladesh black bee" is just another name for the caridina babaulti but I don't know for sure. I post up some more pics as soon as I can :)

Have to say those Burmese Gold Rings are fun to watch in a larger school of ~20! Doing well, loving brine shrimp and probably move them to some micro worms as well shortly. So far haven't seen much of my Bettas but never did in the past so I'll give it another week before I decide how they do as a dither fish. Almost wish I would have bought an extra 10 of them. :)

They will eat flake like its going out of style too. I can honestly say, they were not at all hard to feed! They are truly impressive in a nice large school as well. I am glad you opted for the number you did. I really feel you don't get the true feel for a schooling fish in quantity under 15-20

I only feed live foods so I'm sure they don't mind at all. It is fun watching them tear up a fresh hatching of brine shrimp though.

Rachel,

Are CPDs and Gold Ring similar in size, etc? The 16 CPDs I got from you are great and doing the "dance".... :omg:quite often. They have calmed down and are swiming around (not hiding) most of the time. Trying to decide if a school of 20+ cardinals or Gold Ring would compliment the 125g setup with the CPDs.

Thoughts?

the gold rings are slightly larger and a little more "torpedo" shaped, but of a comparable size. It hink they would work well to bring the cpd's out of the bushes, so to speak.

+1 on Rachels' comments. The Gold rings would look much more natural when mixed with the CPD's in my opinion. I would recommend as many as you can get. I'm going to start working on shooting some video of the group I just got in of them and they are active and curious. I would recommend atleast 30-40 for a tank of that size. I've got 37-38 or so now in my tnak.

It's good to have you back, but don't feel pressured to act with the same speed you used to. It's a hard adjustment, and we're all wishing you only the best. (I've been through and now what it's like. Grief has its own schedule. Try to eat well, get enough sleep, and find some little something that makes you happy — even if it makes you cry at the same time — every single day.)

Another stunnign order! For those that are interested teh Sids she just got are some of the nicest stock I have seen! Super active and super full looking. I think my tank has finally hit capacity for fish so now everyone else needs to buy from Msjinkzd atleast till I decide to super overstock my tank.

I have been trying to get them back in for months. Its gotten harder and harder to import reliably from calcutta. I ordered them last week as well and none came in so we will see! I have a good feeling :grinyes:
