Joined the site and posted my question in the Welcome Forum and it was suggested that I post for the experts to diagnose here.
I have two goldfish(6 years old) and two Koi(3 years old) sharing a room temperature ~65 gallon tank. My fish have been extremely trouble free over the years of ownership except for one instance of fin rot years ago and one of the goldfish "escaped" between the slim space between the filter and cover. I found him motionless one morning when I went downstairs for their morning feeding and saw he was missing from the tank. I was able to get in some water and over the course of 24 hours he actually came back to life. He had a rather bad infection on his side that he was found on so he remained in a quarantine tank with sea salt treatments for weeks until he was good enough to be re-introduced into the big tank.
My most recent issue is with the larger of my two goldfish who appears to have developped some rather "pimple looking" spots on his side. They are primarily white with a red coloring around the edge(hence "pimple"). They do not appear to be fuzzy or stringy either. Other fish appear to be unaffected after close visual examination from outside the tank. I had noticed over the last few weeks he has been itching himself routinely on the bottom of the tank which is not something abnormal for this particular fish, however he had begun to repeat it more than usual. The spots concern me as one is fairly large in size, he also has some small white spots on his gill covers that are not dissimilar from "tubercles". They are not easily visible in the attached picture but are not present on other fish in the acquarium or anywhere else on his body.
His movement has not become lethargic, in fact he has not presented any abnormal issues of behavior other than the excessive rubbing his side on the bottom of the tank. The spots are almost exclusively on his one side, there is a very small defect on his other side which may or may not be related to this issue. As the fish is old he has "battle scars" from over the years.
I have added the appropriate mixture of acquarium salt a few days ago and plan for a large water change again today but am wondering if anyone can assist me in identifying what i'm fighting against? I have been through the Disease Sticky and found a few possibilities but am looking for guidance if at all possible.
