View Full Version : cloudy looking water... air bubbles?

I've dealt with this for a while... my water isn't "cloudy" as in milky, but it looks like millions of tiny air bubbles that are filling the entire water. Could it be from my bio wheel adding all the extra oxygen to the water? I did about a 75% water change a few days ago and the bubbles were back within minutes.

I know it doesn't really put any fish at risk, but it makes the water look dirty. How can I fix this?

That sounds fairly weird. The only thing I could think of is to check and make sure that your filter isn't sucking up any air. Either from an airstone to close to the intake or a small leak in the filter case.

I don't have an airstone, or CO2 or anything that produces bubbles. The bubbles just started to show up about 2 weeks ago. I'll try putting the Penguin on another tank and see if it makes bubbles there too.

I've seen the same on a tank running a Magnum 350 with the biowheels. Most likely it's just bubbles trapped from the agetation of the water as it flows over the wheels.

I have the exact same problem with my tank. Millions of tiny air bubbles trapped in the water. I also suspect my penguin bio wheel 400, but have no idea what to do to correct the problem. I have read that using different forms of chemicals in your tank will form a skin on top of the water that does not allow the bubbles to to escape the water but I have had no luck with water changes. If anybody out there can help us, I will be forever grateful.:shake:

Ditto. I have a penguin 125 and I get those bubbles. Almost looks like particles. I didn't notice them until I got my new lights. Now its so bright in there it really illuminates the bubbles.

I don't allow for much surface agitation either. The water level is pretty high so there's no waterfall effect. I'd love to know how to get rid of it.

I had the same problem, i fixed it by adding a small pump to the corner of the tank "blowing" the water to the surface that seemed to allow the bubbles to be released

I had the problem as well but I do have the answer, I called Rena, who makes my filter...Filstar XP3 and they told me it was just air from the tank and was common and would go away. It did after 2 days or so.

some of you said that you have the bio wheel and think it is causing the problem. I dont have a bio wheel, i have a Aqua clear 300 and have the same problem. I came across this thread looking for an answer.

Well I've noticed you refer to your AC as if you need to switch filters because of cloudy water. The filter itself isn't clouding the water and I wouldn't get a new filter just for that reason. JMO

I had a similar thing happen a while back. It looked like tiny bubble or particles or something. I couldn't tell what they were. I used a product called accu-clear. I believe AP makes it. The water cleared up within a half hour or so. But I'm not sure that mine were bubbles. It may have been something altogether different. In any event, that product woked in my case. Hope this is helpful.

Bubbles, cloudiness, I've got that problem too... may I ask if you people who are having these problems have rocks inside the tank that were taken from the outside?

Well, I don't know how i fixed the problem, but it is gone.
water is clear, and no bubbles.

I have no clue what I did or what happened.

I backtracked my steps to see what i have done.
I did a 25% water change the other day, I have a new carbon insert in the filter. I added 2 live moneywart plants.

I have to say that whatever happened really shocked me as to how much clearer my water is.

Bacterial Blooms/Algae Blooms and so on all usually take place for no more than a week...usually just a few days. Numerious members (including myself) have said this is called a bloom. So...in short this is very normal.
