About 10 days ago I bought some new fish for my 120L planted tank, a couple of neon jewels and a blue ram, a few other fish as well. Today the ram is on the bottom on its side, dark and quite rapid breathing. The darkness is the only external sign. Can anyone tell what it may be and what I can do??

can you check the water parameters then post the results

Yeah, I was stupid. I've been keeping an eye on the water parameters and all has been well, all my fish are healthy (not the ram, sadly not with us anymore) so I had n't checked them for a while. The results of the water test were: ammonia 0.1, nitrite 0.5-1.5, nitrate 50 and a ph of 8.5 (my tap water is 8.5). I've rectified this with large water change.

I've just got back into keeping after a 20 year absence, re-learning the hard way!!!
