My snail buddy lives with his babies in a fish bowel. He was in the tank but he ate all my plants so I moved him.
He has a pretty easy life there, food falls on his head. But last night he decided to bale. I went up at about 2 in the morning to go to bed and realized the big guy was missing. I found him under the bookcase all closed up with his 'door' sunken in. I was abot to throw him out, assumming he was dead, but decided instead to put him in a fresh bowel. This morning he was just fine, crawling around his tank and eating his greens.
He was out of the water anywhere between 5 hours and 30 minutes, hard to say really. I'm glad I thought twice before disposing of him though

I've had mine out of the tank much longer than that. Probably 9-12 hours before we noticed he'd bailed. My one mystery snail has gotten out 3 times. It's usually because there's not enough food (in their opinion) so they go looking for food but when they can't find any, they preserve themselves hoping it will rain I guess. I always follow the slime trail till I find him. As soon as my 10 gallon quarantine tank is done cycling, he's going in there and won't be pulled out unless I'm medicating a fish. kyle
