I'm starting up a new 20 gal. tank & was planning on using filter material from my other well established tanks to give it a cycling kickstart. Should I even bother with the Amrid filter inserts that I got with my AquaClear? I figured the ammonia destroying bacteria cultures would do well enough. That being said, when are the inserts really useful? I'm guessing during ammonia spikes, or for folks who dump lots of fish into a tank that isn't properly cycled..

Also, it seems to me like I should use the third chamber in the filter for something.. maybe just a bit of gravel or other substrate for the bacteria to grow on?

As long as you are not overstocking the new tank, you're right, using the Amrid won't be needed. They are good when there's an emergency situation, but I don't think they are useful for regular use--just more costly. I would add an extra sponge in the extra space, personally.

I just have sponges in my Aqua Clears and they have been doing a great job.
