So in my search for materials to set up my new (to be) planted aquarium, I've come across some great money saving. Which brings me to this question.
I bought a used 33g for $100(CAD). It came with a 24" fluorecent canopy (why would someone design it that way? )
Anyway, obviously I wanted more light. I intended to buy a 36" double. My dad was renovating his shop and had a left over 48" double that he gave me. This will overhang a bit on each side. So, is this a problem? Should I shill out the extra $30 for a 36" that fits "properly"? Let's ignore the aesthetics for now, if I decide that it looks aweful, I'll change it anyway. I'm interested in the practical rammifications.
While I'm asking for setup advice, here's my substrate plan. I've got some sand blasting grit (40kg, free sample from a local quarry) and about a bag and a half (4-5kg) of Profile aquatic potting soil. I plan to mix a bit of peat into the bottom layer for a boot of organics at the beginning, and the additional CEC can't hurt. Comments/suggestions?
cheers.
