1. What are some good fish species that are compatible with Firemouths.
2. What plants do Firemouths preffer? (is anubias nana okay?)

What size tank do you have ? This is kind of important when choosing tank mates for these or any cichlid. Cichlids like to dig, and rearrange their tanks regularly so any plants that you add probably won't last long. All of my cichlid tanks are decorated with rocks, flower pots, and drift woods. They seem to like this kind of setup the best in my experience. If you want to go with plants maybe Angels or Discus might be a better choice over the F.M.s. If you have a smaller tank maybe Rams or Apistos.

A school of 5 Tiger barbs or Giant Danios should be cool in there with the F.M.s.

As far as plants anubias will probably work. Java Fern and Java moss are other options. I think most other plants would at least be dug up and possibly eaten. You might also be able to have floating plants.

These sound like decent options. I think the tank is too small to have other territorial fish.
You can put Plecos with almost any type of fish. A medium species would probably be the best option.
