I don't know if anyone has had any experience with these guys but...
I was wondering if there are any problems with having a small newt (ie japanese firebelly) in a community tank.
I'm not sure if they need to crawl out onto land, or if they're like the little African frogs that are exclusively aquatic.
I kept a pair of California newts years ago in a small 5-gallon with a "perch" above the water, but to my knowledge, they never used it.
Anybody have a clue?

I used to have one some years ago and he didn't have anything to sit on such as a "perch" type thing and seemed quite happy. I wound up bringing him back to the petstore when he was too much for the tank but then the tank was only a 10 gallon. When he got big enough though, he eventually starting digging the taste of his fishy room-mates though so be careful about that. I don't know much more about them, sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I kept some in an aquariom that was half water/half land. My fire belly newts pretty much stayed exculsively on land.

I have a calif.newt in a 10g now with 5 danio's,the tank is set up so there is dry land,so he can get out of the water. The newt is about 6"long including his tail and he never bothers the fish. That might have to do with me feeding him a 3"piece of earthworm a day! From what I understand they like temps in the low 70's,so this would be a problem in a tropical tank.

From my experience with newts, they like to climb out of the water (unlike the dwarf frogs), and they seem to like temp's a little cooler than the typical tropical tank. I would provide floating plastic plants for the newts to climb on so that they can reach the land area.

Hi!
I have no experience keeping newts with fish, what I can tell you is that you REALLY should give them a place for them to get out of water if they want. Otherwise it won't be happy...

Mine loved alternatives of the bloodworms, which was kuhlies, don't put in salt, may cause their fingers to fall apart and make them look like they had a flesh eating bacteria on them.
