What do you do when you have a fish with torn/split fins?
My delta tail bettas always seem to end up with split fins; even the one that I currently have hanging in a plastic isolation tank in my 30 gallon has managed to split his, even though he has literally never been in a tank with any kind of substrate or decorations in it for him to injure himself on. I don't know how they do it, but somehow they do.
And of course sometimes barbs will end up nipping at each others' fins, as will cichlids and stuff. Note that I'm not talking about fin rot or any other kind of disease, I'm talking about actual, physical damage (tears and splits) to the fins caused by nets, thrashing about, squabbles, etc.
So, what do you guys do to aid in healing when you run into this situation? Anything? I've always just left the fish alone. I don't add anything to the water or go out of my way to fix it, on the assumption that it will heal on its own. Over the years I've noticed that sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and I'm wondering if there's anything that can be effective in helping out a bit.
