I'm setting up a 55gal kit from WalMart.

When I was a kid, every aquarium had an air pump.

I'm assuming that now, with power filters, the water doesn't need any further aeration?

Are there any avantages to adding a bubble tube, etc.?

Generally these days the air stones are for looks only. They are handy to have in case you have to keep a fish in a bucket for quarentine purposes. If you have live plants they tend to be bad as they can drive off CO2 which plants need. But any surface movement will helpto airate the water. Just don't overstock.

Airstones are ok in non-planted tanks as mentioned in the above posting. Air bubbles can help preventing stagnant water.

In the majority of my aquariums, I like air stones and use them. I use air stones/bubble wands because of the look mainly. Some of my tanks need them because of little surface agitation but mostly it is because I like the look of a bubble-filled tank. :D

My fish seem to like it too, but it is considered an "option".
