In August 2002, I won a goldfish at the fair (we all try, huh... never thought I would win :p ) so of course I tried to keep it, knew nothing about fishkeeping, and he died within 2 or 3 days.
So I still have this can of goldfish flake... is it ok for danios? What is the big difference?
Goldfish food is generally much higher in carbohydrates and tropical fish food is higher in protein. Will it hurt to feed to the danios, no not really. But I would also get some tropical fish food and give them a varied diet feeding the one every other day. I did this with my tetras until I ran out of the tropical food. They have lived for 3 years so far so I guess it didn't harm them.

I give them tropical flakes, bloodworms, tubifex, they try to nibble on shrimp pellets, sometimes they'll nibble on cucumber and lettuce.
I didn't know if I could use it, or if I should throw it out. Thanks :D

August 2002 was...well, 1 1/2 years ago! The food has seen it's prime, to understate the matter. I would pitch the $2 goldfish food and get some tropical flakes, mixed in with a varied diet...which you seem to be doing.

its too old to be good still.
I never even noticed the date, whoops. 6 months max on most food, flake probably even less once opened.

What goes bad in it? My fish eat it... but I'll probably just trash it now.
A lot of good vitamins start to oxidize and become useless when exposed to air and light. What you are left with is mostly bulk fibre. That is why I avoid those huge containers of food.

And if TKOS didn't already convince you, think of it this way....
...would you want to eat 1 1/2 year old food?
Not I :p
mmmmmmmmmm, like a fine red wine!! :p Aged to perfection!
If it has been uncorked a year and a half, it will be fine (?) red vinegar.
