I've never kept SW fish before but I've got lots of FW fish. I love the look of Black Volitan Lionfish and I'd kind of like to have one in a tank by itself. What would be a good setup for it? I'm only really interested in the fish. I don't want to get into live rocks/corals or stuff like that right now.

So, what should I expect for tank reqs/price/cycling time/work involved/lionfish food/etc.

For a Volitans I would say a tank with a minimum dimensions of 5 feet long and 18inches wide. Not sure how many gallons that would be, I think 100 or 120 gallons. Those fish get huge. Even a 75 gallon tank is too small IMO when they are adults.

As for not wanting live rock, I would reconsider. Lionfish are not real active fish and like to spend a lot of time perched on or under live rock caves. I don't think a barren tank would be a good setup for a lionfish, also Live Rock will play an important role in your flitration setup.

As for what to expect I would recommend reading this book if your seriously considering a saltwater tank. It's under 30 bucks and will teach you most of what you need to know to maintian a successful aquarium. It's will worth the investment.
