I'm sorry the picture is terrible, it's hard to get a good one of him/her in the tank.

Thanks.

Looks like a synodontis, but I can't be totally sure. Does it swim upside-down?

Looks like an eclipse catfish to me.

Doesn't swim upside down that I've seen. I have seen it swim in wild loops though.

I agree, the marking behind the head looks like one on a Horabagrus brachysoma. I hope you have a BIG tank.

He's a lone fish in a 55 right now. He came with the tank so I have no idea what it's needs are.

Planetcatfish (probably the best site for bottom dwellers in general) lists its size at almost 18". You'll need much more than a 55g for life.

Yeah I read that. I'm stuck as to what to do with him now. I didn't know what he was when I got him,he was in a smaller tank than mine, and now I don't know what to do with him.

Maybe post on CL and require that they email you a picture of the tank they'll be going into in order to make sure it's going to a good home?

Yep or try posting an add here or better yet on MFK since there are probably more people with larger tanks than AC.

Can they survive in outdoor ponds?

Depends on the climate. As tropical fish I wouldn't have the water temp drop below 70F and fishbase lists the minimum temp at 23C/73F.

It's a species of sun cat.

Exactly the same type I have 2 of in my tank. I can't remember the scientific name so I will have to look it up. They grow pretty darn slow really after reaching a certain size, so I wouldn't be super worried about it. Mine are 6-7 inches long after 2 years.

(Didn't read the thread, so I didn't notice someone already mentioned the scientific name. :) In any case here's the link)

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=159

18" in length, rarely. I have never seen one that large, so if it happens it's not common. 10" is pretty darn large for one in the hobby.

They are not hard to sell to people that collect catfish, staying fairly small as far as larger catfish go, so I wouldn't worry too much about being able to give him a good home before he outgrows your enclosure. (Actually I would take him if you didn't want him lol. Not sure if you'd want to ship though.)

Mine do nothing but stay in their PVC pipe all day and only come out to eat, even with 220g of water to utilize. Rarely he will swim around the tank at night, but they're not very active.
