:sad

we've been treating our fish thinking they had Ich, but found out AFTER taking a sample of water to our local pet shop that the water had HIGH levels of ammonia instead. we lost 5 already.

my question is this: how do i avoid this and how long will it take for the fish to look normal again?

Is this a new tank?

Water change daily. IME, I did about 30-50% water change depends on what's the level of ammonia.

what kinds of fish did you have in there and how many?
size of tank, and types of filters?

My DH and I are newbies at this....the tank is at the most a 60 gallon. we've had the tank for about a year.

No plants just cichlids...I know for sure we have a peacock in there but don't know the other names. we have 15 left.

As to filtration..I have no idea...:shake: I just know that DH took one out (we had 2) because it was too noisy, and it stopped running. He didn't want to be bothered with it. THAT'S when i think all the problems started. As soon as I can get more info from DH, I'll come back and fill you in.

Thanks!;)
