Otay here is my question, is it good/bad for fish to be in total darkness? When I set up my new tank it will be in a basement office, and there is no outside light at all, should I provide a moonlight/nightlite to prevent total darkness when my daytime light is off?

I dont think it will be a problem...2 of my tanks never see ANY light at night (lights on for 10 hours durring the day) and ive never had any issues with it.

Total darkness is no problem..
There's been a lot of talk of "moon lights". They are either 'regular' or 'high output' LED's. There are some colored lights that also sell as "moon lights". They are not needed, but do look nice, that is if you see the aquarium after the regular lights are off. My tank is in the living room and visable after the main tank lights turn off. So, the moon lights (Custom SeaLife) look real nice at night... They are dim enough not to bother the fish, and bright enough to simulate moonlight.
