I'm considering converting my tetra tank to a convict tank. I really want to breed pink convicts. I know they're considered trash fish, but I have a LFS that would buy them for a low price and I would try selling a few here. Is there any tips for getting them to spawn?
Thanks.

Just make sure the water is clean and condition them on some live foods like white worms and red worms and a viable size of fish and they will happily breed for you..

You will need 2 males and 5 females to really be effective. If there is no competition it will be harder to get them to breed. Usually, once they start they won't stop.
Pink convicts are NOT a trash fish. I don't know why you would even think that. The biggest problem about them is that they are essentially the most maniacal killer you can get in a 4.5 in. fish. In spite of their small size, they can and will take on fish 4 times their own size. Due to their aggressive nature and no other reason make them a very hard fish to sell. By contrast, the black (zebra) convict will warn off other fish or attempt to and then only resort to small bites. The pink con prefer to kill. They will even kill their mate if the female is not ready or refuses to breed.
Please take time to learn about any fish you wish to breed and don't limit yourself to rumors and uneducated information.

Sorry, I should have re-phrased that. I didn't mean trash fish, I just meant they're harder to sell.

Con's will breed in a mud puddle for real i was just trying to tell you the right way to do it and i guess all in all they really aren't trash fish but they hold little respect in hobby community.. I like them i always have and is one of the first cichlids i have owned that bred for me..

Not only are they hard to sell, they are hard to give away.
As they say in the business to breed them, "just add water"
They are a great little fish, and i have not found them any nastier then standar cons.

Yeah breeding convicts and trying to sell them is real kinda pointless a lot of LFS already have tons of convitcts and if you look around you might even be able to see some tanks with mated pairs already. I use them as feeders I give a pair a ten gallon and every time they spawn I gove them 2 weeks and I remove the fry and toss them into my tanks oscars love fresh meat hehheheeh

I keep my convicts with the Oscars. If the LFS want some, I net them out and the rest "just disappear" (lol).

Can you feed babies to parents? Or maybe I could just use those as a fish food recipe.

You can. I'm not sure if they will accept them but who knows

The only thing they would do is kill their fry if they come back into breeding season and the current fry will not leave the area..

I have some in my Oscar and Pacu tank but as far as seeing some of the fry disappear but rather than flurish even more than just in a tank by themselves. They have been teaming up and just trying to run the tank.

I have a mating pair of Black Convicts with 2 Green Terrors and 2 Jack's. By far the meanest are the Convicts, especially when breeding, followed by the GT, then the Jack's. The Convicts are prolific breeders and I'm not sure why they don't have long ears and a bunny tail... :evil_lol: Momma likes to eat the fry for a snack if the other fish try to invade their area, then the male takes over and keeps momma out of the breeding area, but by then the fry's are pretty much all gone. I'm guessing the male plays the bigger role in raising the fry. They are really good at fending off visitors and I kinda feel sorry for the others. I don't try to save the fry mainly because I wouldn't want any more Convicts in the tank. If it's a tank of just Convicts, the fry should have a much better survival rate.
